I was born in New Zealand in 1971 and have lived in Australia since 1980. I've recently noticed that both of these countries are "coming of age", and that there are movements to change the existing flags. I would like to state that I don't mind the existing flags, as these are the ones that I’ve grown up with and am used to. Personally because of my particular situation, I even enjoy the fact that they look similar, as this enforces the historical links that both countries have to each other in the ANZAC tradition.
I feel that both these countries have given me so much, that its about time that I give something back, and so if the flags have to change, I want to be a part of the process. I thought one way that I could help was to was to put up a flag (or two) that if people like could be proposed for the national flags of the respective countries.
This turned out to be a little harder than I thought as there seemed to be groups or bodies already claiming "ownership" of this process, and they are not really the easiest things to interact with, so I’ve taken the path of least resistance and just joined the web ring, and hopefully people can give feed back as they like.
The Australian flags are based around the blue on the current flag, and the southern cross and federation stars, except they are now 8 pointed to represent the 6 states and 2 territories.
The New Zealand flags are based around the black and white colours normally associated with New Zealand. The five pointed southern cross stars come from the existsing New Zealand Flag.
I also had a much grander plan to design a flag that could unite the world. The basis for the design is, the colours represent : Deep blue for our planet as seen from space and the eight pointed white star to symbolize our seven continents and island nations.
It's my belief that these designs are unique to me, and I am sorry if anyone has proposed these designs before, no harm is intended as I truly believe that these are my own designs. I was very happy to see that a web ring exists and if you haven't checked out the other sites already I strongly recommend you do as there are some great flags out there as well.
